CHAPTER TWELVE

Kurt strolled to the punch table. He hoped they were serving the same recipe as the good old days. His high school boasted the best punch. Real juice, not the concentrated stuff. Apple, Orange, Peach and Pineapple. He'd vouch for that anytime, at least until his graduation, or while whoever made the Punch remained at the school. He asked the ruby tending the refreshment stand for two cups, one for himself and one for Helen, whenever she decided to come out of the bathroom.

Kurt shook his head and sighed in exasperation.

"Excuse me?" the young woman tending the refreshment stand asked.

"Oh, sorry. I was mulling over a problem." He took the two filled cups from her hands, thanked her, and placed one down near the corner of the table, standing beside it to keep it ready for Helen. She was driving him crazy. She was among the best editors at the firm. Smart, lovely to gaze at, good-natured and fair-minded to a "T". Because of her, he had made his peace with the Good Lord. He'd tried everything to make her feel comfortable in her position. She was more than ready for a position as full editor of her own department. But day in and day out, the woman was unhappy and nervous, especially around him. Especially since —

"You're Kurt Lance, aren't you?" the girl asked.

Kurt nodded.

"Lookin' good," the girl said. "I'm Jenny, Helen's friend."

"Oh, yes, Helen mentioned you. But weren't you and your fiance' double-dating with us."

"Uh-uh," Jenny nodded. "We're supposed to meet you both here."

"That was my understanding as well."

"So where's Helen?" Jenny asked.

"The last I saw of her, she was headed for the restroom."

Absently, he tasted the punch. It was delicious. He turned to Jenny. "Who made this punch? It's as good and better than the original."

"Patrick. He always made the punch. But anyone who knew was sworn to secrecy. You know, a guy thing."

Kurt laughed. "A guy thing?"

"You may think it's hilarious now, but have you forgotten how sensitive a teen-ager's ego can be. Although you may not have suffered with your ego as much, being a top-notch academic and athletic hero.."

Kurt chuckled. "You're right. I guess I didn't suffer that much with my ego, that is, until I started college as just another freshman. I stayed with the academics and the football for a while, then I decided to concentrate strictly on the academics, especially English, and I became simply another struggling student."

Jenny smiled. "You grew up. If only we could look at life with the eyes of an adult during those growing up years, we'd save ourselves a lot of growing pains."

A presentable young man with sandy colored hair and about Kurt's age and build, joined them. He had a round jovial face and a warm expression in his eyes.

Jenny came around the stand. "This is Ron, my fiance', she said, practically beaming.

"Oh, so here you are. So where is the love of your life," Ron asked jokingly.

"Ron!" Jenny nudged him in the hip.

"What did I say?"

Kurt repeated, "Love of my life," but he wasn't laughing.
